Start with overnight locations, then label each day: transfer, touring, train or local. These are adaptable planning examples, not packages or promised driving times.

For a culture-focused week, consider two nights near Sigiriya, three in Kandy and the final night near the airport: six nights, departing on day seven. The hotel changes and airport journeys are clear transfer needs; a Sigiriya-area touring day can be requested separately. Do not squeeze Ella and the south coast into the same short week just to tick boxes. After a tiring arrival, change the first night rather than forcing a long drive.
Ten days: separate the train from the car
Try three nights near Sigiriya, two in Kandy, three in Ella and one near the airport: nine nights before a day-ten departure. Request the road journeys and selected sightseeing days. If a suitable train is running, a hill-country leg can become station drop-off, train, then hotel pickup. An Ella walking day does not automatically need a retained driver. The Ella-to-airport-area move is a substantial travel day; keep it separate from an early flight.
Fourteen days: add time, not just destinations
One possible split is three nights near Sigiriya, two in Kandy, three in Ella, four on the south coast and one near the airport: thirteen nights. Book the inter-hotel transfers, then choose whether sightseeing deserves a dedicated vehicle. Four beach nights need not mean four driver days. If adding a safari, replace or redistribute nights rather than quietly turning a transfer into a packed touring day; park jeeps and admission are separate.

For each date, record where you sleep, the journey needed, any fixed deadline and your luggage. Mark same-driver continuity only where it helps. Compare the complete quote, including waiting, mileage and driver expenses, against separate journeys. Account for the season, road conditions and your own pace; leave spare time instead of treating a map estimate as a promise.
